Rafael Leao, a forward for Milan, scored twice to help the defending champions overcome a goal deficit and defeat local rivals Inter 3-2.
After winning, Milan momentarily held first place in the standings until Napoli passed them with a 2-1 comeback victory at Lazio.
Theo Hernandez of Milan and Denzel Dumfries of Inter were given yellow cards in the ninth minute, adding to the tense situation.
Seven minutes later, Rafael Leao of Milan, who had received a pass from Sandro Tonali, equalized. Leao shot past Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.
In the 54th minute, Milan forward Olivier Giroud sealed the comeback with a shaky but potent effort that caught Handanovic off guard.
In order to increase the lead, Leao scored his second goal in the 61st minute after quickly eluding the Inter defense.
Milan is second in the table with 11 points after five games. Next Saturday, they travel to Sampdoria, while Inter hosts Torino.
